Charles Mathews and Richard Hardy family members coming from VA to Edgefield District SC

Charles Mathews was the father of Molly Mathews the wife of Richard Hardy b ca 1745 family of Isle of Wight VA lived in IW which eventually became Greenville Co VA - he lived on Fountains Creek. Richard's older brother John Hardy b 1740 of Isle of Wight lived in the area of IW cut off to become Mechlenburgh and Lunenburg Co VA. This was near Hounds and Reedy Creek. John came 1784 to New Hampton along the Big Stevens Creek and Savannah River in Edgefield District. JOhn and Richard's brother Thomas Hardy came in 1786 to Laurens District. (Painting of Thomas Hardy house built 1800 to the right.) If Richard Hardy's daughter is Elizabeth whose marriage to James Mathews is recorded in 1788 in Brunswick VA. then Richard probably came after that to Saluda regiment section of Edgefield District SC. Part of that area is now in Saluda Co SC. Sadly for Richard and Molly, their daughter did not settle in SC, rather James and Elizabeth were on the move between Brunswick VA Hawkins TN and northeastern Al in the years 1796 to 1808. Was he a trader or an Indian agent?

According to Stella Hardy
Pickens in her book, she stated Richard removed to Edgefield SC, married and raised a large family and died there. Since we have proof of only 4 children, there must be a few missing children. Large family means at least 6 children and more likely 8 or 10. Maybe some of his children could have been wards. Richard Hardy Jr's wife Barbara Holt (I once read) may have been raised by an uncle.

John Hardy named a son Richard b. ca 1767 after his brother who migrated to Saluda District of Edgefield Co SC. Richard "JR" died intestate 1843 in Edgefield. According to family tradition Richard Hardy Sr.  and his wife came to Edgefield with a daughter and Richard died there. Later his death date was found in the Bible of a descendant, Caroline Hardy, who married Rev. Edmund Morris. The death date written was 2 October 1809. Wife was Molly who died 1801. The Lunenburg family of Hardy mentioned Richard Hardy removed to SC, married and had issue. His brother Thomas Hardy moved to Laurens District SC in 1786. Picture of house right.

Richard Hardy may had at least two sons William b 1781 VA and J. W. , as well as at least 2 daughters Elizabeth and Susannah Hardy who married a John Mathews who was not the brother of the James Mathews who married Elizabeth Hardy in VA.

Carol Hardy Bryan is descended from William Hardy b 1 June 1781 VA and lives near Saluda 20 miles from the Richard Hardy land. Richard Hardy bought 245 acres from John Ewing Calhoun on 24 April 1798. At that time George Fluker and Moses Mathews were his neighbors. John Mathews (Susannah Hardy's husband) was either living on Richard's land or had not arrived in that part of the neighborhood yet. Three years later Richard Hardy sold 200 acres of the land to daughter Susannah for $300, and six years later 18 August 1804 after his wife Mollie's death, Richard Hardy sold 45 acres to John Pope for $300 (must have the house) - John Pope must be a son in law?

1790 Richard Hardy of Greenville Co VA in Saluda, Edgefield SC near top of page with 2 men over 16 (Richard and John W.?- not sure about him), 1 under 16 (William), and 4 women (Susannah Hardy, 2 unknown girls , Molly Mathews Hardy). Did Richard come to SC in 1784 with his brother John Hardy?  If his daughter Elizabeth married in 1788 in VA, then maybe he did not leave till 1788. Elizabeth was probably born 1770. Her brother William was born 1781 in VA so where are all the children in between 1770 and 1781? His daughter Susannah Hardy married in 1802 Edgefield.

To get a feel for the 1790 Edgefield SC neighborhood where Richard Hardy lived, he is near Duke Williams the son of John Williams b: 4 NOV 1737 in Hanover County, VA , died 15 OCT 1794 in Edgefield Co, South Carolina. (WILL) John Williams was living in North Carolina, Granville Co, when his brother, James, became an orphan. James became a Brig General in the Rev. and died while fighting in NC. John Williams' first marriage was to Mary Atwood, daughter of James Atwood of Amelia Co., Va. and a first cousin to the wife of James Caldwell, Mary Elizabeth Forrest. John Williams removed from Laurens Co to Edgefield County about 1785. John's daughter Rebecca married John Bullock of Edgefield who died after 1810. Then she married her 1st cousin Col. James Williams.

These were all Revolutionary War Patriots and neighbors to the Hardys. In fact Richard's brother John Hardy had fought, and brother Thomas Hardy in Laurens District had fought under Washington. It was an area which had been practically destroyed by Bloody Bill Cunningham who came from Laurens District next door. There was plenty of land available because Tories had fled, but there was a lot of rebuilding to do.

Getting back to John Williams in Richard Hardy's neighborhood, John's brother, James Henderson Williams, was promoted to Brig. General in the Revolution. A son of Daniel Williams and Ursula Henderson, he was born 10 Nov 1740 near the Old Fork Church, Hanover County, Va and died 8 Oct 1780, at the Battle of Kings Mt., Gaston Co., NC. He had married Mary Wallace in 1762. Left Granville Co., NC in 1772, living at first along the Little River in Laurens Co., SC in 1773. But he moved to the plantation called Mt. Pleasant on the Edgefield District side of Mud Creek by the time of the Rev War. Bloody Bill Cunningham took over his house and moved the wife and children to a barn to live in. Later Bloody Bill hung and disembowled 2 of James children.

In 1798 Richard Hardy moved from his illustriously Patriotic neighborhood to another place with 245 acres which he bought from John Ewing Calhoun in 1798. John Ewing Calhoun was a famous SC senator. The property on both sides of the Little Saluda River by Dayleys Creek was bounded by Moses Mathews and Jacob Pope. John Mathews joined Richard Hardy by 1800 to help him with the new plantation and three years later before Molly died 20 September 1801, Richard sold the land 25 July 1801 to his daughter Susannah Hardy who married John Mathews about 1802. Molly did not sign her dower rights.

1800 census after Richard Hardy moved to his new place in Edgefield. John Mathews is notated to the side of his name. About 6 people are living in the house.

Stepping backward a few years, before coming to South Carolina, Richard Hardy and Molly lived in Greenville Co VA right near Mecklenburg Co where John Hardy and Ann had first lived in the early part of her marriage, but Greenville was also adjacent to NC where the family had connections along the river which flowed south to north.

The area where Greenville is was Brunswick which was divided to include Greenville, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg and other counties. Here is the developement of the county where they lived.

1732 Brunswick gained from Isle of Wight.
1745 Lunenburg taken from Brunswick
1752 Halifax taken from Lunenburg
1754 Bedford from Lunenburg
1764 Charlotte and Mecklenburg taken from Lunenburg
1780 Greenville taken from Brunswick and Suxxex
below BM is Brunswick after they took it from IW (Isle of Wight) and divided Isle of Wight

The first Hardy son known to arrive in SC seems to have been John Hardy in 1784 to Edgefield District Old 96th with wife Ann Williams and at least 6 children- they bought a plantation near new Richmond settled by a Virginian (lower left part of map on the Savannah River). Family tradition says his father Richard came with him and died in Edgefield. Then came Thomas Hardy to Laurens District in 1786 Old 96th with wife Phoebe Buford (also Bueford). Lastly Richard Hardy (Jr) came with his wife Martha "Molly" Mathews about 1790 to Edgefield Old 96th near Saluda. Richard Jr. did not stay very long because he was probably following his children. he may have been living with a child in the 1790 census. He appears in the 1800 census Edgefield near Saluda.

Taking information from Greg Mathews and Carol Hardy Bryan I have found a tangled web of relatives and tried to put them together. Richard Hardy of Saluda is probably an executor of Richard Hardy Jr-´s father´s will- John Hardy of New Richmond near Cambellton near old Hamburg. That older Richard Hardy has been a puzzle to Carol Hardy Bryan for many years. Well we all wondered.

A couple years ago Carol found out thru an Edmund Morris family Bible that Richard Hardy had died
2 Oct 1809 and that his wife Molly Hardy died 20 September1801 Edgefield. This year Carol found out from Greg Mathews that they found the mention of Richard Hardy and wife Molly Hardy in the will of her father Charles Mathews in VA. Richard Hardy of Saluda in Edgefield was the father of a William Hardy b 1 JUN 1781 died 13 OCT 1856 Saluda SC. who married m 24 Mar 1803 Anna Nancy "Nannie" Mathews who died 4 AUG 1871 in Old Edgefield Co., SC (buried in the Hardy Cemetery in what is now Saluda County, SC). That Richard Hardy b abt 1745, d 2 Oct 1809 (reference thru Carol Hardy Bryan):

"His death date was recorded in a family Bible found among his descendants. Son William b 1781 was known to b a Virginian. "Old Edgefield Historical Society). Richard Hardy's wife was Martha "Molly" Matthews, daughter of Charles of Brunswick County, VA.

In Edgefield SC some branches of the Mathews married Ann and Agnes Calhoun. Please see Calhoun section below. Off hand it seems there are 3 groups of Mathews. One group was in Edgefield early as 1779- they may have been the Irish ones. Then there are family members who came from VA with Richard Hardy. And last there are Mathews like Anna Nancy Mathews, dau of Moses Mathews, who was born in NC . Now it may have been adjacent to the VA county where the the Virginians came from.

Saluda County was not established until 1896 when Edgefield County (one of the original five counties) was divided further. It is now surrounded by five counties: Aiken, Edgefield, Greenwood, Lexington, and Newberry. Richard Hardy lived west southwest of present day Saluda and north of Edgefield. When John Ewing Calhoun sold land to William Hardy 16 October 1801 Richard Hardy was northeast of Moses Mathews. They were probably not far to the right of the "96" in the old and large Edgefield District "Ed" map below.

    children:
    1. Elizabeth Hardy born Feb 11, 1771 in either Brunswick or Lunenburg County, VA moved to Edgefield after marrying James Mathews in Brunswick County, VA on Dec 10, 1788.
Richard Hardy was listed as giving surety (Elizabeth was only 17) implying he was her father.
If Elizabeth Hardy in Brunswick VA was Richard's daughter, according to her descendants, Elizabeth and her husband James Mathews (died 1846) and brother in law John Mathews removed to Hawkins, Tennessee and later to Jackson, Al where Elizabeth died 8 Dec 1834. her brother in law John Mathews married 25 DEC 1794 in Brunswick Co VA to Frances MISKELL . Apparently they went back and forth between VA, TN and AL 1796-1806. There is a court case in Jackson Co., AL Chancery Court Final Record Book, 1847-1851, pages 159-175, dated October 1846 through June 1847 where Susan (Matthews Looney) Sutton petitions the court to disallow her husband, Stephen Dill Sutton, from receiving the interest in right of his wife the estate of James Matthews, Sr. and Jr., who were her father and brother and who had both died in 1846. She and three witnesses state that Stephen Sutton had deserted her without any cause in 1830 or 1831. He had left the state of Alabama. She never had any maintenance from him in the last sixteen years. The three witnesses also stated that the brothers of Stephen Sutton had indicated that Stephen was either married or living with another woman whose name was not mentioned. Throughout this case,Stephen Sutton was mentioned as being the husband of Susan. Had he not been her husband, there would have been no reason for this case.
Stephen Sutton was living in Jackson Co., L with his wife, Susan, and her three children in 1830. Shortly after 1830, Stephen apparently went back to Jackson Co., TN where his father had moved his family from. He either married or began living with Nancy Rutledge.

There are three known Matthews family cemeteries in Jackson County. One is in Matthews Cove and two are in Little Coon Valley. The cemetery in Matthews Cove is the family of Walker Mathews - probably John Mathews whose son James B. 26 DEC 1795 in VA may be buried there (or at Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery on Little Crow Creek). The one at the head of Little Coon is the James Matthews of Lunenburg ,Virginia family cemetery and is well marked but poorly kept. The other in Little Coon is unmarked and exact family unknown.

Here is a John Hardy which is near the Saluda area. The other John Hardy, son of John Hardy and Ann Williams, is in the Parksville area down near Allen Anderson.

This John Hardy near Saluda has 8 unidentified children, as well as a probable mother in law and a wife in the house.

You will find some of the NC line (Jesse Hardy) and the Virginia line buried together in Old Town cemetery in Dallas county, Ala. The NC line came from Bertie County, NC. Jemima HARDY to beloved nephew Thomas Covington and niece Patsey Covington, Deed of Gift, 1 May 1811, great regard and respect, Negro girl Winny with her increase, Winny to remain in my possession during my natural life should that be before said Thomas Covington and Patsey Covington now respectively aged twenty and eighteen, said girl is to be handed over and the money arising from her hire to be equally divided between said Thomas and Patsey. Witnesses: Henry Briggs, Thomas Ingram. Jemima (x) Hardy. Proven May 1811 by Henry Briggs before John R. Bartee, J. P. Recorded 15 May 1811.
Jemima Hardy appeared in the 1810 census of Edgefield with the following persons in her household:
    1 Male under 10, 2 males 16-26
    1 female under 10, 1 female 26-45

Her husband was probably away in Lincoln Co across the river in GA, or she was a widow. She does not appear in the Edgefield census again. Jemima Hardy was a member of Hardy's Baptist Church which was on the Carolina side of the Savannah River about ten miles above Augusta, GA (new Richmond area). She was baptised in Nov 1809 and deceased in Mar of 1814. Baptised in Oct. of 1809 were John Hardy who was dismissed by letter Oct 1818, and Mary Hardy was baptised in Oct of 1809 and dismissed by letter Dec of 1817. This was the same church that John Hardy (son of Richard and Mary Covington Hardy) belonged to and his sons Richard and wife Barbary [Barbara - supposed to be Holt]; Covington and wife Elizabeth Howerton; Daniel [who married Mary Roebuck]; John [who married Clarissa Roebuck]."

On the other hand, no one knows what happened to the sons of Jemima Wilson b 1772 in Bertie Co, NC (d/o Edward WILSON) and John Croom Hardy b ca 1774 in Bertie Co, NC (s/o Elizabeth Razor and Jesse Hardy who died 3 SEP 1827 in Lincoln Co, GA) and how they were related to the Covingtons. Jemima Wilson and John Croom Hardy got married 9 Apr 1793 in Bertie County, North Carolina. Their son Eldred Leland Hardy was born ?  John C. Hardy was the first born and must have died before his parents went to GA. Jemima went along and made her home in Edgefield near her kin (unknown). John C. Hardy's brother Jesse b: 26 JAN 1776 in Bertie Co, NC married Celia Golding who was b: 16 JAN 1787 in Lincoln Co, GA. His sister Susannah Hardy married Jeremiah P. HARDY of Bertie NC 19 JUN 1808 in Lincoln Co, GA. Although Jemima has stayed in Edgefield, it was only a hop, skip and jump to Lincoln- just across the Savannah River. She is down near Parksville, Edgefield- really near the children of John Hardy and wife Ann Williams, both deceased. But the Parksville Parks family have family in Lincoln GA- there was probably a ferry across the river.

    3. Susanna Hardy bought 200 acres from her father on 25 July 1801- both sides Dayleys Creek Little Saluda, adj George Pope- Moses Mathews and John Mathews her future husband signed. On the 16th of October 1801 Richard Hardie and Daniel Coleman witnessed a sale of 247 acres from John Ewing Calhoun to Hardy Mathews for $318. By 19 August 1804 Susannah married John Mathews / John Mathis when her father Richard sold 45 acres to John Pope, adj. John Mathews, estate of John Ewing Calhoun,William Hardy and John Mathews . By 17 October 1818 John Mathews is dead when his heirs are mentioned in a plat sold to William Jennings for the high price of $1800 (almost unheard of) which came originally out of the estate of John Ewing Calhoun. Richard Hardy, William Hardy, John Mathews on Daileys, Martha and Bud Cade Mathews, Peterson Borum on Lick Creek, James Arnold, Zack Pope, Josiah Etheridge (Elinor Mathews husband), Thornton Coleman (father of Daniel Coleman, husband of Martha Odom Mathews), Phillip Jennings and William Jenning all lived near each other on 2 October 1820 when John Pope bought a$2000 mortgage from Randolph Geiger. On that same day he paid $5000 for 500 acres on the Little Saluda River.
Widow Susanna Mathis lives next to Jacob Pope in 1820. Enoch Mathews is nearby.

1810 census Edgefield is not done in neighborhoods. Names are clumped in quaisi alphabetical order in a haphazard way so you cannot identify the neighborhood.
0 to 10, 10 to 16, 16 to 26, 26 to 45, 45 and older; number of other free persons except Indians not taxed; number of slaves

This older John Mathews must be the one who married Susannah Hardy.
This could be John Mathew's father who is in 1790 Edgefield. John could be the son of this man:

Greg Mathews says:I believe that James Mathews was a brother of Drury, Lewis and Sugar Jones Mathews who were all sons of William and Mary Mathews. This whole clan lived around the Cambridge area of Edgefield right on Half Way Swamp. At the moment I do not have any documentary evidence that these Mathews relate to me, however, I do believe that it is so. My Mathews family which settled on the Saluda were from the same part of southern VA as all of these Hardy's were. Anyway, here is the Bible transcription reference:
Saluda Co Library: Family Bible Records (Old Ninety Six District Chapter, South Carolina Genealogical Society), p. 124 There is no editor or compiler listed, no publisher, and no date of publication (very strange). The page with the listing does state that the bible is in the possession of a man named Grady Hill.

    Greg Mathews says:
OK, I was just going thorugh my records so I could put together an email once I heard form you.
First, you had something on that page about Mathews "researchers" figuring out that Richard Hardy's wife Molly was the daughter of Charles Mathews of Brunswick County, VA. The "researchers" in question is me. I had been giving Carol info as I came across it this past summer.
What I was going to tell you about was the bit about the other Richard Hardy's "second wife" Elizabeth Mathews that you have near the top of the page http://richard-hardy.blogspot.com/.
OK, the Elizabeth Mathews that you found in the 1850 Edgefield census and say was a wife of Richard Hardy was not a Mathews, I believe she was a Hardy! The 60 year-old Elizabeth Mathews who is living with 18 year-old James Hardy was the widow of James Mathews who had just died prior to the census 10 May 1849. I have a copy of their bible record so there is no doubt that she was his wife and not a wife of Richard Hardy.
The fact that there is a James Hardy living with her in 1850 (my guess is that he is a grandson) and that there were several Hardy's named in the bible record of James and Elizabeth lead me to think that she may have been a Hardy. Either that or she and James had a daughter who married a Hardy.

    according to Greg Mathews
dialzero@bellsouth.net: This is the James Mathews brother to Sugar Jones Mathews, Drury...

1810 census with James Mathews and brothers on same page.
This James Mathews b ca 1766 was a brother of Drury Cook Mathews b. 19 OCT 1760 died 22 DEC 1830 buried in Mathews-King Cem, Hwy 246 Cambridge, SC, Lewis Mathews and Sugar Jones Mathews who were all sons of William and Mary Mathews:

In 1810 James Mathews is between 26 and 44 (he is probably born 1766). His wife is under 26.(born after 1785 ) They one girl under 10 at home. I believe this is Elizabeth unknown born 1791 with their first child Olif b Oct 1810 per the Bible

The 60 year-old Elizabeth Mathews in 1850 who is living with 18 year-old James Hardy was the widow of James Mathews who had just died, prior to the 1850 census, 10 May 1849. I have a copy of their bible record so there is no doubt that she was James' wife and not a wife of Richard Hardy. The fact that there is a James Hardy living with her in 1850 (my guess is that he is a grandson) and that there were several Hardy's named in the Bible record of James and Elizabeth lead me to think that she may have been a Hardy. Either that or she and James had a daughter who married a Hardy.

    =================================================================
GREG SAYS: There is no indication that the younger Elizabeth married a Hardy so maybe the named Hardy children were illigitimate. That doesn't make sense because there were 3 named Hardy children and I find it unlikely that she would have been quite that brazen as to have 3 illigitimate children by the same man over the course of several years (although apparently my maternal grandfather's grandmother was just that brazen....). The only thing I can think of is that maybe the elder Elizabeth was previously married before James, had a daughter (who later married a Hardy) and then her husband died and she married James. The 1810 census does show 2 young ladies in the household of James, yet we only get the name of one daughter from the family bible so this scenario is possible.
    ================================================================
GREG SAYS: One final thing I wanted to point out involves the children of who you call Saluda Richard Hardy (husband of Molly). You have two sons listed for him. I didn't see daughter Susanna listed, but I'm sure you are aware of her. What you might not know is that he likely had another older daughter named Elizabeth (born Feb 11, 1771 in either Brunswick or Lunenburg County, VA) who married James Mathews in Brunswick County, VA Dec 10, 1788. This James and Elizabeth are completely different from the James and Elizabeth whose bible record I listed above. (I disagree- he married both Elizabeths) This James in VA was a grandson of Charles Mathews making him a nephew of Saluda Richard Hardy's wife Molly making James and his wife first cousins.

I believe that Elizabeth is a daughter of Richard and Molly because for one thing Richard was listed as giving surety (Elizabeth was only 17) implying he was her father ---he might even be listed as her father, I can't remember--- and second, of the two Richard Hardy's who are known it makes far more sense for her father to have been Saluda Richard Hardy since he was still in VA at the time of her marriage.
Let me know if you have any questions.
    Regards
    Greg Matthews

In 1850 he is living with what appears to be his grandmother Elizabeth Hardy Mathews and his aunts and uncles out in Saluda area where the Bullocks live near Jane Bullock age 93 (1757) the daughter of Captain Francis SINQUEFIELD
who died 24 Mar 1781 and his wife Sarah Lamar of Charleston SC. The Bullochs were also an early Charleston family with thousand of acres they acquired.

Since Jane 1757 is the great matriarch of the area I decided to look into her to get a clue as to Richard's 2nd wife's family. Jane was married very likely twice. One marriage was possibly 1783 to Jeremiah Oates born 1757 in Savannah, Georgia. He fought in the Revolution and died in Milledgeville GA.

In looking for Mathews I came across Mourning Mathews living in 1840 Edgefield. She is living next to a son in law Jas. S. Pope. [James Solomon Pope married her daughter Susanna Mathews] Her brother or cousin Jacob Pope is also in the census. Mourning POPE was b. 9 Jun 1769 in Edgecomb NC and died before the 1850 census on 20 Jan 1847 in Edgefield, SC. [I've never found proof that she was born in Edgecombe County, NC, but it is my belief that her parents were from there.] She married in Abbeville, South Carolina about 1788 [I would say they married closer to 1795, Drury was married once before Mourning and had a son, William Mathews, by that marriage] to Drury Mathews b: 19 Oct 1760. They lived in Cambridge, Edgefield, SC. [northeastern part of the county in modern day Greenwood County, very close to the town of Ninety-Six] Morning's probably last born daughter Mary Ellen b. 10 Aug 1809 in Cambridge, Edgefield married Albert Powhattan King about 1830. Mourning Pope was the daughter of Solomon Pope and Susannah Dawkins who married 18 Apr 1765 in Old 96th District. Did Susannah then marry a Mathews? Solomon Pope's father Sampson Pope and mother Susannah [last named was Thomas -- from family bible] came very early to Edgefield SC before the American Revolution in about 1740. Sampson's Will was proven Oct 28 1803 in Edgefield. Two sons are known from the will-Sampson and Jacob Pope. [I've not seen Sampson as a son, but the family bible names Solomon, Elijah, Jacob and Henry as sons] (contact hc@ouzts.net)

Susannah"Anna" Quarles who married to Isaac MATHEWS Jr..
[Isaac Mathews was my 5G grandfather, and his middle name is unknown, assuming he had one. There was an Isaac Edward Mathews in the area at least 15 years prior to when my ancestor arrived in Edgefield --abt 1788-- who is probably the source of the confusion. There's not much doubt that my Isaac Mathews married Susanna Quarles back in Brunswick County, VA as he is named in her father's will as well as two of their children. I've never been able to figure out who started the rumor that his wife was a Pope.] [There is a record of another Isaac Mathews (probably the one whose middle name was Edward) who served in the Revolution and filled out a pension request. In the request he states that he lived in Edgefield for a time before moving to Georgia and then, I think, to Alabama. It is this Isaac who served in the Revolution. If my Isaac served no record of his service exists today.] - See James Waldrum Mathews his Descendants and Ancestors by A. S. Mathews, Jr. (blue book). They must have had Drury Mathews who married Mourning Pope and Lewis who died March 17, 1809 and married Elizabeth Pope.

[Drury was a son of William Mathews and his wife Mary. Drury had at least two brothers, Lewis and Sugar Jones Mathews, and possibly a 3rd, the James who married Elizabeth that we have been discussing previously. Drury's brother Lewis married Elizabeth Pope, the sister of Drury's wife Mourning Pope. The Lewis who married Nancy Allen was a son of my ancestor Isaac Mathews. Isaac and his children all lived at the junction of the Little and Big Saluda Rivers. Saluda Richard Hardy lived next door to Isaac's sons Moses and Hardy (my 4G grandfather) Drury Mathews and his brothers all lived north near Cambridge on Half Way Swamp.]

[There was yet another Isaac Mathews that really confuses things. He lived in Abbeville County and was in no way related to any of the Mathews that I have mentioned here. The Isaac who was the father of Lewis died in Edgefield County 25 Mar 1791.]
    ======================================

Lewis Mathews, son of William and Mary, probably was born to the second marriage as well as Drury Cook Mathews who married Mourning Pope about 1788. or am I wrong? Are there 2 Isaac s of the same age in 1790? in this area of Edgefield-Abbeville? [Yes, they were probably about the same age although we only have dates of death for either of them so it is hard to say for sure.] In 1840 Mourning Mathews is not even indexed and on the same page Lewis Mathews is indexed as Simeon. [Simeon is correct. Simeon was a son of a Luke Mathews who was possibly also a brother of Drury Mathews. The children of Luke lived in the Cambridge area also and there are some interesting things that make it appear they were related to Drury and the others in that area, but at this point in my research on that line I cannot make any claims one way or the other.

In 1840 one Lewis indexed was the son of Susannah Hardy and her husband John Mathews. Opinions vary on how this John Mathews related to the other Mathews, but my opinion is that he was a first or second cousin of Richard Hardy's wife Molly Mathews.]

Lewis's wife Nancy Allen was born: 1772/73 in Edgefield Dist., South Carolina. Nancy had 8 children. One was Josiah Allen MATHEWS b. 12 JUN 1803 who went to Clarke Co, Alabama. Nancy Allen was Ann Williams's cousin. They both had the same grandfather Robert Allen whose will I have in my John Hardy blog. Mourning Mathews was between 70 and 80 in 1840, ca 1761-1769 and 2 boys age 20-30 were living with her. [One of them was probably one of her step-grandsons John W. Mathews born 1818. She named all of her step grandchildren in her will.]

[Can you tell me your source for Martha's last name being Pope? She was definitely not a sister to Mourning as there was an equity court case about 1815 against the estate of Solomon Pope that names all of his children. Martha was alive then and would have been named if she were related. I believe that Martha was actually a Mathews of unknown relation to Moses. A 1792 will for a Susannah Mathews (NOT the wife of my Isaac!!!) lists her "son-in-law Moses Mathews and his brother Lewis Mathews" as sole executrs to her will. She also names two grand daughters Nancy and Elizabeth. Moses had two daughters by that name. With those names there is no way Susannah could be anyone other than the mother of Moses's wife Martha. Obviously it is possible that Susannah was previously married to a Pope and that Martha was a product of that earlier marriage.]

GREG SAYS: Alot of the above info on Drury and Mourning Mathews and those in his and her family come from the family bible of Mourning Mathews that was passed down to her daughter Mary Ellen and now is in the possession of someone in Georgia. I have scanned copies of the original bible, but I had to promise to never give them to anyone.... It has a lot of info on both the Pope and Mathews families. I can point you to a web page that has a transcription of the bible and some (not all) of the scanned pages if you are interested. My scans are very high quality and the ones on the web page are barely readable.

Going back to 1790, here is the will of Martha's mother. Martha married Moses Mathews.

Here is an early Edgefield Mathews will written on 1790:
    from greg mathews-
Susanna Mathews of Edgefield County, SC
To granddaughter Nancy Mathews one Negro girl named Chania
To granddaughter Elizabeth Mathew one Negro boy named James
To grandson Lewis Mathews a Negro boy named Samuel
To daughter Martha Mathews a Negro wench named Darkess and all her increase
To son-in-law Mosses Mathews one Negro named Dompy
To said Nancy Mathews one bed and furniture
To said Elizabeth Mathews another bed and furniture
To daughter Martha Mathews another wench named Sarah to her and her heirs
    forever
Wit: Lewis Mathews, Moses Mathis, Isaac Matthis, Beverly Borroum
Extrs: son-in-law Moses Mathews and his brother Lewis Mathews
    Dated: 29 Dec 1790
    Rec: Court of Mar 1792
Note from Greg and Susan: This is the mother of the wife of Moses Mathews of Edgefield
County. If her last name was Mathews it begs the question as to who her husband
was. Moses and Martha Mathews did not have a son named Lewis who is
documented. Their daughter Cebell is estimated to have been born about 1788, yet
she is not named as a grandchild here. So, this implies that Cebell was born after
this will was written (b 16 APR 1792) . If that is the case then this leaves a gap of several years between the births of Nancy 1786 NC and Elizabeth (b: 2 DEC 1787 ) and Cebell which leaves enough room for a son Lewis. Since Lewis is not named in the 1810 equity case brought by Martha Mathews then it must be assumed that Lewis died young.

    ______________________________________________________________

The Calhoun family moved from Ireland to Pennsylvania to Wythe Co Virginia and the the Calhoun settlement in Abbeville District SC between 1731 and 1756.

James Patrick & Katherine Calhoun, James was born ca 1720 in Donegal Ireland and died 5/27/1762 in Abbeville District, SC.
James Patrick Calhoun married Margaret Catherine Montgomery in Ireland. He was a surveyor by trade and came to America in 1731 with his family. When the family left Ireland they sailed to Penna. Being driven away by the Indians during the French/Indian War, the family moved first to Virginia where James died. The widow of James and children went to South Carolina in Feb. 1756. They established the Calhoun Settlement in what became Abbeville District. Today the area is located in Greenwood/McCormick Counties, about twenty miles SW of the town of "96".
On 2/1/1760 there was an Indian attack on the settlement and Mrs. Katherine Calhoun and her son, James Jr. were killed along with about fifty others. Two Calhoun daughters were carried into captivity, one being later rescued but no trace of the second daughter was ever found. This incident is referred to as the Long Cane Massacre, being named after the Long Cane Creek which ran through the settlement.

The five remaining Calhoun children of James Patrick Calhoun and Margaret Katherine Montgomery are:
    1. William Calhoun-married 10/19/1749 in Va. to Agnes Long. William and his family moved to SC. 1756. They had eleven children. Two of their daughters were killed in the Long Cane Massacre SC on 2/1/1760 and another daughter, Ann Calhoun was captured by the Indians and lived with them for several years before being returned to her family. Her mother recognized her by a birthmark. William kept a store at which were sold corn, rye, wheat, flour, pork, and liquors. (Information from Southern History Assoc. 1904 by Salley.) Children : Ann Calhoun, Joseph Calhoun, Agnes Calhoun, Ezechial 1770 - 1817 married 1792 to Frances Hamilton.
    2. Ezechial Calhoun- was born 1720 in Donegal Ireland and died 5/27/1762 in Abbeville District, SC. He married Jane Ewing.
    3. John Erwin calhoun
    4. Mary Catherine Calhoun was born 1752 Augusta Co., Va., came to South Carolina in 1756 with her widowed mother and brothers and sisters. married Noble. She died 2/3/1803 in Abbeville District, SC.
    5. Patrick Calhoun was born 6/11/1727 in Co. Donegal Ire. and died 1/15/1796 SC. In "Life of John C. Calhoun" there is a foot note which stated there is possibly some evidence that Patrick Calhoun married three times and that Martha Caldwell born 1750, Cub Creek, Va was his third wife. Date taken from her headstone. It seems his brother William kept a diary and recorded a marriage between Patrick Calhoun and a Sarah McKinly on 2/26/1767.

Some of Ezechial's children were born in Lancaster Co., Pa and others in VA. He married Jane Ewing. She was born 1724 in Co. Donegal, Ireland. In a brief biography of Ezechial Calhoun by Mary B. Kegley 'Early Adventurers on the Western Waters, vol. 3,part 2, pages 597-8:
......Ezechial Calhoun accompanied his mother, four brothers, sister Mary Noble to Wythe Co., Va., before October 1745, settling on Reed Creek,VA where the family chose lands still regarded as the finest in the country. The Woods River entry book shows Ezechial Calhoun bought 500 acres at the location known as the Kenton Plantation, owned by the Kent Family (Augusta Co., Survey Bk. 1; Pat. Bk. 30, page 512; Pat. Bk. 31, page 239; Woods River Entry Bk., Filson Club, KY; Augusta DB 12, page 182)....According to Kegley's notes, in 1756 the Calhouns left Wythe Co. Va. and settled in Abbeville SC. because of Indian disturbances on the Va. frontier. Ezechial made a will in South Carolina in September 1759 and then returned to his home on Reed Creek in Wythe Co. in 1760 or 1761 where he was killed by an Indian as he stood at his cabin door. He was buried on his farm in Wythe Co. and his grave was marked in 1970 by Mrs. Louis Hill. Ezechial's will was probated in Charleston 5/25/1762 and it names all his children, the land on Long Cane SC and Reed Creek in Wythe Co. VA. Eurovol@email.com

She was the daughter of General Andrew Pickens Simpson so highly and deservedly celebrated as a commander in the American Forces during our revolutionary struggle with Great Britain and the most distinguished hero in the Battle of Cowpens. Her mother was Rebecca Calhoun, daughter of Ezechial Calhoun, sister of John E. Calhoun, present Senator from South Carolina. After having been educated in her native State she was married to John Simpson, her first and only husband at the age of 22 years. With him she lived 45 years; and became the mother of seven children, two daughters and five sons; the youngest of whom died at the age of two years. The remainder still live. "Pensacola Gazette"

    Susan,
I just noticed something. I was reading through some of that blog page (very nice work by the way) and down towards the bottom I see you mention a Sarah Lamar of Charleston right after you start talking about #10 James Hardy. Do you know anything more on the Lamar family? I have yet another James Mathews who supposedly married a Dinah Lamar and was living in Edgefield County at the end of the 1700s. James died in 1819. Most people say his wife was Dinah Lamar, but my opinion is that she was Dinah Braswell/Breazel/Brazeal and she was a daughter of a William Braswell and Sarah Lamar. If my theory on her is correct her mother Sarah Lamar would have been about the same age as the Sarah Lamar of Charleston that you mention.
In case you are looking for info on any Mathews of the Edgefield area I have a web page at http://bluntrazor.com with family files on all of the folks that you mention on your blog.

I resigned as an officer of OEDGS and Quill editor in February thinking, "OK, now I can pursue some of my other projects." I had cataract surgery on my eyes which slowed things down considerably. They have been fine, but I need glasses for distance more than about 18 inches, so now I have to wait until I can get my new glasses to do very much work.
The James M. Hardy that you wrote me about was the son of Elizabeth Mathews and James Hardy, not Richard and Elizabeth Hardy. I don't have the documentation on this family, but do have names and dates.
Elizabeth (b 6 Feb 1813, d 26 May 1884) was the daughter of James Matthews (b bef 1793, d 10 May 1849) and his wife Elizabeth (d 7 Apr 1857) of Virginia, married 1809, but I don't know which county. The Hardy and Matthews families were closely tied in Virginia and the tradition continued when they migrated south. I have so many Matthews in my line that I have more Matthews blood than I do Hardy.
I don't know who James Hardy's parents were, but he and Elizabeth had at least three children: Sarah Elizabeth, James (b 1 Oct 1831), and Olif.
    See yah,
    Carol

Even thought the son is born in Edgefield SC, I think this is a Bertie NC family. The Baggots are from Bertie. In 1840 John Hardy is in Cobb Co GA next to the Baggots. In 1830 it is a toss up where he is. The Jasper Hardys are from Bertie. So are the Lincoln Hardys.
    Cobb GA
John Hardy might be living next to 85 years old Sarah Sutton (she might be Sarah Tarbottom /Tarbutton of Maryland who died in GA). It looks like a daughter married John Hardy.

Moses Matthews was the step-son of Susannah (Anna). He is mentioned in her will as her step-son. His mother, as far as I can see, is unknown at this time.

Do you know how I can get a hold of S. J. Matthews, Savannah, Ga. I would love to view the family bible she is possession of that you reference in your blog. I am taking my mother up (from Florida) to Edgefield, SC and will be doing some further genealogy research and try to locate Moses Matthew's mother as well as some other ancestors information. Moses Matthews was my 4x GGrandfather through his son Bud Cade. Savannah, Ga is on my way to SC and it would be wonderful to see that. Please let me know ASAP. My email is diannekaplan901@gmail.com.

    Thanks.

One source, who used birth dates to prove it, said Capt. Francis Sinquefield could NOT have been married to Sarah Lamar. Jeremiah Oates did marry a Jane Sinquefield. However, she was born ca. 1765, married in 1783, and died in 1845 (as an Oates) in Mississippi -- proven. So, I am not sure Oates married Capt. Francis Sinquefield's daughter, or another one. Francis's family was from SC, and Oates was from GA., so while it is certainly possible that she is Francis' daughter, I can not prove it as of yet.
